.PONDERING LIFE’S UNSEEN RIDDLE THROUGH NICK JOAQUIN’S SUMMER SOLSTICE Nick Joaquin This analysis paper will take account of “Summer Solstice”, a critically-acclaimed short story written by Nick Joaquin, who is thought to be arguably the greatest writer of his generation. Before further scrutinizing every angle and every aspect of the said short story, I would like to first discuss some minutiae and fine points regarding the writer of the story himself, Nick Joaquin. The purpose for this brief overview of Joaquin’s life as a writer is to help readers understand better the themes that lie behind every story he made, particularly The Summer Solstice.”The identity of a Filipino today is of a person asking what is his identity.” - Nick Joaquin When I bought this book a couple of months ago, I immediately skimmed the first two pages. I did think that this was a book about a female character with anatomical deformity and the book was about what caused the deformity and what should be done to correct it. I thought that this book would make me endlessly laugh. Having formed that ridiculous image in my mind, I set this book aside. There were and there still are so many books by foreign authors that beckon on me.
Also, just like most Filipinos, I always thought that foreign books were far better than local ones even those by our local literary greats. On many counts, I was awfully wrong. First, this novel has nothing to do with the study of medicine, anthropology or anatomy. It is a novel that every Filipino should be proud of. It is a novel written by a Filipino about Filipinos and for the Filipinos.
However, it does not preach. It does not self-deprecate. It does not promote self-interest nor does it encourage us Filipinos to hate ourselves and wish that we were of different nationalities. This novel is part of who we are as it shows a pivotal part in our nation’s history and how our race was formed or came into being by getting sustenance from two colonizers, akin to two navels: those of Mother Spain’s and Mother USA’s. The two countries that greatly influenced our nation’s psyche. Big eared and small, the San Joaquin fox has to fight to stay try to stay alive. Nick Leeson's Double Life In 1999, director/screenwriter James Drearden released the movie Rogue Trader, which encapsulates the true life of futures trader Nick Leeson and his role in the downfall of Barings Bank. Ewan McGregor stars at Nick Leeson, an ambitious young British stock trader while Anna Friel plays his wife Lisa. Drearden's focus is on Leeson's activities at the Singapore Stock Exchange but he also constructs a love story subplot that adds little to the central plot. Critics of the movie Rogue Trader find Drearden's attempt to be provide little insight to actual events and a 'Major Disappointment.'
James Drearden portrays Nick Leeson as a rebel, a character that gets drunk in pubs and discos who bears his bum to flight attendants. This depiction of Leeson is far from the truth. Although he is certainly foolish, Leeson was the poster child for western capitalism. He grew up in Watford, England as the son of a plasterer; who then landed a job in London in a low-key position and grew to become Baring's Bank star trader in Singapore. Leeson joined Barings in 1989 when the old financial institutions started a new way of thinking, when they replaced hiring upper class recruits to those of less privileged background.
These new traders were called 'barrow boys,' which was to indicate the 'aspiring yuppie elements prevalent in the financial in the financial centers of the world.' Barings main. Nick Vujicic “Imagine being born without arms. No arms to wrap around a friend; no hands to hold the ones you love; no fingers to experience touch; no way to lift or carry things. How much more difficult would life be of you were living without arms and hands? What about legs? Imagine if instead of no arms, you had no legs.
No ability to dance, walks, run, or even stand. Now put both of those scenarios together no arms and no legs.
